Claim: Google penalizes AI-generated content

Verdict False

Google does not penalize content for being AI-written; appropriate use of AI is not against its guidelines. What breaks its spam policies is generating content primarily to manipulate rankings. Mass-producing AI pages that add no value counts as scaled content abuse.

“Google detects and penalizes content written by AI.”

The claim gets the line Google draws wrong. Google’s policies are about the purpose and value of content, not the tool used to write it.

So a site can be penalized for AI content when it is mass-produced without value. The same policy forbids that for human-written content too. See Scaled content abuse.

  • That AI-written pages rank as well as others. Google ranks on quality signals (E-E-A-T). Thin or inaccurate output will do poorly whoever wrote it.
  • Anything about AI answer engines other than Google Search. Their policies on AI-generated sources are not documented in these terms.
